A gap in the schedule

In the never-ending procession of work, work and more work, we can so easily become detached from ourselves and God. Without realizing it, the way we live our lives today often forces us to neglect those times of peace and quiet which are essential to our well-being. Some people therefore deliberately create a gap in their schedule – a time set aside for doing nothing. It could be argued that this is an idle waste of time. On the other hand, it could be the very medicine we need in order to be more effective and productive in our daily work.

A time to heal – this gap can provide a time of healing. The frantic pace of life takes its toll on our bodies, minds and spirits. Switching off, even for a short time, can heal the injuries life inflicts upon us.

A time to listen – not only to God, who longs to speak to us and encourage us in our daily lives but to our inner self too. Perhaps there are hopes and aspirations deep within which are drowned out in the constant stream of activity.

A time to appreciate – to wake up early on a warm summer’s morning and watch the sun rise and to listen to the birds welcoming the new day. To appreciate the colours of the sky, the trees, the roof tops and to reflect on the love and prayers of those who enrich our daily lives is a medicine in itself.

A time to catch up – on all those things you wish you could do but never get around to. Reflect upon the gifts and skills in your life and reflect on how little some of them get used.

In days gone by I used to travel to America with my work. One of the highlights of this was to be able to sit on the plane in mid-Atlantic, totally detached from computer screens and telephones, with an enforced ‘do nothing time’. It was wonderful to be able to gaze out of the window watching the rising sun and allowing my thoughts to buzz around in my head, catching an occasional hint of inspiration which would help me once my feet are back on solid ground. Some of my most creative ideas have been born at 35,000 feet above the sea. With a pen and paper in hand, I would simply let my imagination run riot.

Is there a gap in your schedule? Should there be one? Why not try it.
