Alpha

The Alpha Course is undoubtedly one of the most successful evangelistic courses to emerge in the UK within the last 50 years. It combines a number of basic ingredients into a successful formula for sharing the basics of the Christian faith.

  • The Meal - essential to any Alpha course is the meal. It may be a full 3 course meal but it is usually a lighter meal. The aim is to help people to relax, get to know one another and to talk informally about anything other than church and faith.
  • The Talk / Video - you can run the course by using the Alpha Video or DVD as the main teaching element. The Alpha material comes as the full version (40-45 mins) or the Express version (20-25 mins). Alternatively, some people prefer to give the talk themselves. It is important to use the material as provided in the book 'Questions of Life' and to offer them in the order set down. Sometimes it is necessary to alter one or two in order to fit in with speakers or the Awayday.
  • Discussion Groups - This is one of the key ingredients because it it here that people can ask questions, share their own understanding and engage personally with the Christian Faith without feeling they are being examined or put on the spot. The Training of Discussion Group Leaders is vital and they will make or break the course.
  • Holy Spirit Awayday - An essential ingredient of the course in the focus on the Holy Spirit. This normally lasts for one day (10am-4pm) and comprises the 3 sessions on the Holy Spirit. It is completed with a time of ministry and prayer.

A typical evening session is as follows:-

7:00pm Leaders arrive and prepare the venue and food. A prayer time will normally be allocated within this preparation time.
7:25pm Guests arrive and are welcomed and shown to their seats. It is a good idea to keep people in the same group throughout the course unless there is a personality clash.
  7:30pm Meal is served
  8:10pm Introduce the theme
8:15pm Show the video / DVD or give the talk
  8:50pm Discussion Groups **
  9:25pm Final announcements
  9:30pm Finish

** If the Express DVD is used then this section would start earlier, allowing for longer discussions.

You can also run Alpha at other times of the day but allow for a similar length of time.

All of the Alpha material including promotional material can be purchased directly from the Alpha Web Site.

Recently we have held a Business Alpha Course in the Nottingham Council House. This was compressed into an hour (12:30-1:30) each Friday lunchtime and attracted people who work in the city. The course was followed by BBC Radio Nottingham.
